Hytera DTM6000 DMR Trunking SCADA Data Modem — Detail

Telemetry from remote sites is a small, regular, loss-intolerant traffic profile — and the DTM6000 is built for exactly that rather than for throughput.

Why radio rather than cellular

Cost and control. A subscription per outstation across hundreds of sites accumulates, coverage at a remote pump station is frequently marginal even where a phone appears to work, and the operator network is outside your control during precisely the events when telemetry matters most. Running telemetry over DMR trunking infrastructure you already own removes all three problems.

Interfaces

IP/Ethernet and serial ports operate simultaneously on the same network, so one modem serves different classes of industrial equipment at a site. Industry protocols — IEC 60870-5-101 and -104, DNP3 and Modbus — are supported directly, which removes a protocol converter from the cabinet.

Coverage and cost

DMR trunking infrastructure and higher transmit power mean wide-area coverage from fewer base stations. On a distribution network with many small sites, the number of base stations is usually the dominant cost, so this is where the economics are decided.

Security

End-to-end encryption with AES-128 or AES-256: data is encrypted at the modem and decrypted at the SCADA gateway, so it is protected across the whole path rather than only over the air. Many industrial protocols carry no authentication of their own — see firewall and network security for how that is handled architecturally.

Configuration, performance, fault and firmware management run through the network management system. See SCADA and telemetry.
