Antennas

An antenna performs to specification only inside its own band. Choose by the frequency your organisation is assigned, not by fit — an antenna outside the assigned range reduces radiated power and raises VSWR, which is experienced as lost range rather than as a fault.

Batteries

Capacity is the honest figure to compare between packs; quoted operating hours assume the 5/5/90 duty cycle and fall with high power, analogue mode and cold weather. On certified radios the battery carries the certification too — a standard pack removes it.

Earpieces & Headsets

Audio accessories decide whether coverage is usable. A radio heard perfectly on a bench is not heard over a running plant, and the resulting complaint is normally reported as poor coverage rather than as the wrong accessory.

Cases & Carrying

A radio that is uncomfortable to carry ends up in a drawer. A clip that rotates lets the radio sit flat when the wearer bends, and a case with a clear window keeps the display usable without removing the radio.

Chargers

Bay count is a shift-planning decision. A fleet charging overnight needs a bay per radio; a fleet running two shifts on rotated packs needs fewer. Charging belongs outside classified areas and, in cold stores, in the warm part of the building.

Power Supplies

On a repeater site the power supply is part of the coverage design. A repeater on the same circuit as the lighting stops when the lighting stops — which is exactly when a team needs to coordinate in the dark.

Microphones & Speakers

A speaker microphone at the shoulder is heard where a radio on the belt is not. Where hearing protection or gloves are worn, button size and emergency-key operation matter more than any specification on the datasheet.

Mounting

In a vehicle installation the mount and antenna position decide performance more than the radio does. An antenna on the metal of the roof, near the centre, outperforms the same radio on a boot-lid or glass mount by a wide margin.

Programming & Data

Programming cables are model-specific and are the piece most often missing when a fleet has to be reconfigured in a hurry. An organisation that holds its own master codeplug should hold the cable that writes it.

Other Accessories

The parts that do not fit any other category and still decide whether equipment survives the year — screen protection, larger PTT units for gloved use, external GPS modules and lightning protection for antenna installations.

Cables

Cables are the cheapest component in a radio system and the one most likely to stop it working. Connector arrangement and length are model-specific, so compatibility is confirmed against the radio rather than assumed from the plug.
