DMR Radio Systems
Simora Engineering chose TechnoRF's professional maintenance and repair service instead of replacing a heavily used fleet of older radios, and achieved a substantial budget saving in doing so. The real technical condition of each device was assessed in detail and a multi-stage overhaul programme was applied. TechnoRF's technical service carried out RF module testing, battery capacity measurement and firmware updates; failed PTT switches, antenna sockets and speaker diaphragms that were degrading field performance were replaced with genuine Hytera parts. After laboratory calibration each device was returned to close to factory specification, raising fleet performance significantly without any new equipment purchase. Silicone protective cases were supplied for the points that field reports identified as fragile, and a short training session covered correct charging, battery use and device care.
A professional radio has a mechanical life considerably longer than its apparent one. What fails first is a small set of predictable components — the PTT switch, the antenna socket, the speaker diaphragm, the battery — and every one of them is replaceable. The chassis, the RF board and the display are usually untouched. The decision to refurbish rather than replace therefore turns on a diagnosis: whether the failures are in the consumable parts or in something structural. That diagnosis requires measurement, which is why the fleet was assessed before any work was quoted.
A radio can transmit and receive and still be well out of specification. Measurement shows transmit power below rating, frequency error accumulated over years of thermal cycling, and receiver sensitivity degraded to the point where the device works at short range and fails at the edge of coverage. Users experience this as "that radio is weak" and stop using it. None of it is visible without a service monitor, and all of it is correctable.
The economics of a refurbishment depend on the repaired device lasting. A non-genuine PTT switch with a lower cycle rating returns the device to the bench within months and consumes the saving that justified the repair. The same applies to speaker diaphragms, where a substitute part changes the audio response and produces a device that sounds different from the rest of the fleet. Using genuine parts is what makes the refurbishment worth doing rather than a deferral of the replacement.
Replacing a component fixes the fault; calibration restores the performance. Setting transmit power, deviation, frequency and receiver sensitivity against a reference after the mechanical work is what returns the device to something close to its original specification rather than merely to working order. It also produces a measured record for each unit, which is what allows the fleet's condition to be tracked from then on rather than guessed at.
A significant share of radio faults are use-related: charging habits that shorten battery life, devices dropped because they are carried loose, antennas used as a handle. A short session on charging, battery use and device care costs almost nothing and measurably extends the interval before the next repair. Combined with protective cases at the points field reports identified as fragile, it addresses the cause rather than the symptom. TechnoRF operates a professional radio technical service centre covering measurement, genuine parts, calibration, user training and cost optimisation.
