Antalya Provincial Health Directorate — HF Broadband Antenna Detail

The Antalya Provincial Health Directorate had TechnoRF install a broadband folded dipole antenna to improve HF voice and data performance at its SAKOM emergency coordination centre. The tunerless 3.5-30 MHz design removes retuning delay when operators change frequency, which is the moment that matters in a crisis. The kevlar-reinforced element was chosen for a coastal climate with high solar, humidity and salt loading. The installation was treated as an electrical system rather than a mechanical mounting job: tower equipment was bonded into the static earthing and lightning protection scheme. Propagation testing after commissioning produced clear long-distance voice contact.

An HF antenna on the Mediterranean coast

Antalya is one of the most corrosive installation environments in Turkey for an HF antenna. Sustained humidity, year-round solar exposure and airborne salt produce oxidation on conductor surfaces, rising contact resistance at connectors and surface leakage across insulators. Their combined effect is that the VSWR measured on commissioning day degrades quietly over one or two seasons. The antenna keeps working; the usable range shortens; and nobody logs it as a fault. The kevlar-reinforced construction addresses the mechanical half of this by separating the tension-bearing layer from the conductor, which makes stretch and sag behaviour predictable in a salt-laden atmosphere.

Where a provincial SAKOM sits in the network

A provincial health directorate's coordination centre is simultaneously a far end and a hub: it talks to the national centre on one side and to ambulances, hospitals and field teams within the province on the other. Those are two different distances and two different propagation behaviours. Antalya adds geography to the picture — districts behind the Taurus range and the coastal strip do not respond identically on the same frequency. The antenna was therefore selected against the province's actual operating map rather than a single preferred direction.

What a tunerless antenna is worth in the field

Removing the need for an antenna tuner across 3.5-30 MHz means an operator changing frequency does not wait for a match. The second benefit is on the maintenance side and is less obvious: with no automatic tuner in the system there is no component to fail, to lose calibration, or to require its own feed and control path at the top of a tower that is reached a few times a year. Every moving part removed from a mast head converts directly into availability.

Bonding and lightning protection as part of the install

An HF antenna on a tower accumulates static charge, and the feeder carries that charge straight into the equipment room. TechnoRF bonded the antenna and tower components into the static earthing and lightning protection system and continued the protection chain along the feeder. The coastal climate is decisive on this side too: earthing connections corrode in the same salt atmosphere as everything else, so the bonding scheme needs periodic measurement rather than a single commissioning certificate.
